In this project, I intend to discern the relationship between three important leaders in the period directly following the Fourth Crusade and the establishment of the Latin Empire of Constantinople. These leaders are Latin Emperor Henry of Flanders, Pope Innocent III and King Andrew II of Hungary. These three leaders were very influential not only in the events of the Fourth Crusade, but also in the establishment of a new political order in Eastern Europe following the destruction of the Eastern Roman Empire.
By examining secondary analyses as well as primary communications between these figures, I hope to discover the nature of their relationships and how these relationships affected the course of history. I will, in conjunction with my advisor Dr. Curta, examine the sources available to shed light on the topic. Using my knowledge of the Latin language, I will investigate primary communications between the parties, translating them into English if necessary. After determining the nature of these relationships, I will write an essay which will be presented as my History Honors Program thesis. An excerpt of this thesis will be published by the University.
